Fewer incidents but more charges laid by OPP

Provincial Police report a drop in crime in the western part of the Rainy River District.

According to a year-end report, the number of property crime incidents fell 7% from 446 in 2023 to 414 in 2024.

The number of violent crime incidents was about the same as in 2023 (329 – 2023; 327-2024).

There were also few drug-related incidents, with 24 cases compared to 30 in 2023.

OPP did issue 17.4% charges with 2,202, compared to 1,875 in 2023.

Police were busy on area highways and roadways.

OPP responded to 170 collisions in 2024, a 4% increase over the year before.

Police also laid 580 charges for highway traffic offences.

Impaired driving topped the list, with 93 charges, a 40% increase from 2023.
