Summer Programs Cancelled

Summer youth programs have officially been cancelled in Fort Frances.

Town council was divided in their vote Monday night.

Recreation and Culture Manager Aaron Bisson told council that it would be too difficult to adhere to physical distancing requirements with upwards of 30 youth and four counsellors involved.

Councillor Doug Judson suggested they hold off on a decision and see if restrictions are pulled back making it easier to run programs.

“There is some signal that things are changing. I’m wondering whether we should take a bit more of a measured approach to this. I hate to have cancelled this and then tomorrow to turn around and see that we could have went ahead,” says Judson.

Councillor Andrew Hallikas says it’s about safety for him.

“Even with the loosening of restrictions, there are still going to be difficulties in running the program. I would want to be sure that if we run any of the programs that we are able to run them safely,” says Hallikas.

The programs were to begin at the end of this month.
