County To Review Pro-2nd Amendment Resolution

Koochiching County’s Board of Commissioners will take some time before considering a resolution aimed at opposing proposed gun control measures.

About forty people attending a meeting Tuesday, many supportive of naming the Country’s Second Amendment Sanctuary County.

The resolution before the County has replaced the word ‘Sanctuary’ with ‘Dedicated.”

County Solicitor Jeff Naglosky warned Commissioners they could be stepping out-of-bounds with such a declaration.

“If we start to talk about what will or will not be enforced and where money will and won’t be spent, that concerns me,” says Naglosky.

He says such a declaration could also be challenged in a court.

Gun supporters worry proposed laws, such as so-called Red Flag laws that allow law enforcement to remove guns from people considered a threat to themselves or others, as an infringement on their rights.

They not over 400 counties across the U.S. have already passed resolutions declaring themselves a Second Amendment Sanctuary County, and want Koochiching County to do the same.

“We’re asking the county board to reaffirm your oath to the Constitution of the United States. That is exactly what this is and it’s a loud speaker to the rest of the state and the rest of the country,” says Jeff Erickson, one of those attending.

Commissioners plans to take time reviewing a proposed resolution before making a decision likely next month.
