Thunder bay’s Krista McCarville’s and the Soo’s Brad Jacobs will represent Northern Ontario at upcoming national curling championships.

Jacobs returns to the Brier for a sixth straight year after beating Devlin’s Mike Badiuk and his Geraldton-based rink in the final of the provincial men’s championship.

Badiuk reached the final by rattling off six straight wins after losing his first three.

Meantime, McCarville went perfect in the women’s championship, defeating Krysta Burns of Sudbury 6-5 in the final for a second consecutive trip to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

 

At the under-18 qualifier in Sioux Lookout, Ashley Payne of Fort Frances earned a berth to the girls provincial championship after finishing second behind Thunder Bay’s Britney Malette.

Payne’s only loss came to Malette.

Owen Riches of Fort Frances was swept by Dallas Burgess of Kakabeka Falls for a berth on the boy’s side.

 

A split on the court for the Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams.

Alyssa Herrera scored 18 in helping the women to a 75-64 over Hibbing to remain a perfect 8-0 in conference play.

The men slipped into a tie with Hibbing for third in the standings after an 83-72 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday.

T.J. O’Connor led the team with 19 points.

 

Fort Frances Lakers dropped a pair of one-goal games to the Red Lake Miners on the weekend, losing 2-1 Friday and 5-4 Saturday.

The Lakers are now 7 points behind Wisconsin in the race for the 5th.

 

The Emo Express were winners of the atom girls hockey tournament held at the Memorial Sports Centre over the weekend.

 

International Falls Broncos boys hockey team won a pair of weekend games.

Brady Wicklund notched the hat trick in Friday’s 6-2 win over Virginia.

Saturday, the Broncos won 4-3 over Kitson.

Jordan Smith scored the eventual winner.

The junior team also won both their games, 2-1 over Virginia and 5-o over Kitson.

 

The Broncos girls hockey team will start playoffs tomorrow. They will take on top-seeded Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.

The finished off their regular season with a 4-2 loss to Crookston on Saturday.

The Broncos basketball teams lost both of their games on Friday.

The boys fell 83-75 to Mountain Iron-Buhl.

The girls lost to Virginia, 79-47.

The junior girls squad lost 50-38 in their game with Virginia.

 

The Broncos boys swim and dive team finish second at a meet in Aurora,

The team combined for 11 podium finishes and seven firsts.

Will Serrano led with a pair of individual wins and two more as part of relay teams.

He won the 200 individual medley and 100 free.

Bronco relay teams won the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle events.

Other winners were Jake Slatinski in the 200 free, Adrian Mannassau in diving and Alex Bissonette in the 100 butterfly.
