Local Sports Report For Wednesday, January 29

Several new records have been set in the Arrowhead Ultra 135.

Scott Hoberg of Minnesota completed the run from International Falls to Tower in 30 hours, 45 minutes, besting the old record by more than 3 and a half hours.

Pam Reed of Wyoming was the first woman to finish the 135-mile run, crossing the line just before 4 a.m. today.

In the ski event, Dan Campbell of Montana set a new record. His time of 20 hours, 57 was more than an hour better than the previous record.

Kate Coward of Minnesota also set a new fastest time for women, finishing the ski event in 34 hours, 56 minutes.

Winners of the bike event were declared Monday.

Neil Beltchenko of Minnesota was the first to cross the finish line in 14 hours, 3 minutes.

Risa Hustad of Minnesota was the first women finisher.

 

Five local bowlers have advanced to the Open provincial championships.

Jeff Watts qualified for both the Sunset Country men’s team and the singles competition after coming out on top of a qualifier at Plaza Lanes in Fort Frances on the weekend.

Jordan Sokoliuk earned a berth to the mixed team with a seventh-place finish in the men’s roll-offs.

Toni Benning and Marla Fedeniuk earned spots to the ladies team after finishing 2nd and 6th respectively in their qualifier.

Kathy Bois was eighth, good enough for a spot to the mixed team.

The provincial championships happen in April in Thunder Bay.

 

The Northern Ontario Men’s and Women’s Provincial Curling Championships begin today in Temiskaming Shores.

There are no local teams entered, but Mike Badiuk of Devlin is skipping a rink based out of Geraldton.

Trevor Bonot of Stratton is playing third on another.
