Support for a ban on shopping bags in Fort Frances is raising some discussion about similar bans elsewhere.
The city of Kenora recently passed a motion declaring a climate emergency.
Kenora City councillor Kirsi Ralko says while she doesn’t have any concrete plans to bring anything forward at this point, she isn’t closed to the idea.
I haven’t looked at formally putting it forward yet but I anticipate that if somebody needs to here I might look at doing that,” says Ralko.
She adds the unanimous passing of the motion in Fort Frances means Kenora council is more likely to see a similar by-law come forward.
Ralko says taking better care of the planet is becoming a more common discussion at council meetings across the northwest.
“Thunder Bay followed suit with us in the declaring a climate emergency in their municipality recently. That’s something that regionally a lot of us are starting to really seriously look at.”
Fort Frances councillors are expected to formally pass the by-law on the shopping bag ban in the near future.
