Business Owner Expresses Concern With Ban

At least one Fort Frances business owner not in favour of the town’s plans to ban shopping bags,

Scott Krienke-Turvey of Inks Spotz Apparel addressed council prior to its vote on the issue Monday night.

He questions why council is moving so quickly with the ban, calling the by-law poorly written.

“Ninety-nine per cent of plastics going landfills are not plastic bags and have nothing to do with single-use packaging in order to get it out the door. Most of it is water bottles,” says Turvey.

Krienke-Turvey adds the move to plastic bags will mean added expense to his business which will end up being passed onto the consumer.

“So I am looking at something I can give to my customers versus something now I have to charge them for. I have not raised my prices in the 6 years I’ve been in business. Now I’m going to have to.”

Krienke-Turvey also presented council with a number of alternative bags, including one made of cotton, he says that aren’t that environmentally friendly and aren’t recyclable under the town’s definition.
