Mayor Sees 2019 A Successful Year For Council

The mayor of Fort Frances is calling 2019 a successful year.

Not everything was accomplished, but Mayor June Caul says the entire council worked hard for the betterment of residents.

“This wonderful council I’ve been lucky enough to get has really stepped up and I see them out into the public eye. I see them really thinking about what is important and trying to do the best thing for everybody in town,” says Caul.

This was the first full year for town council.

Caul says the number of positive comments she’s received is an indication that she and council are on the right path.

“That’s for most in my mind all the time. I don’t want to disappoint or make anybody unhappy about things so I try to do what I believe is best and that’s what council does.”

Caul says one of the highlights was improved relations with area First Nations.

“It was a very difficult relationship for many years and we signed up the declaration of intent in friendship this year. We really have become friends with the Agency one chiefs. We have great meetings with them.”

Caul says hopes of getting the mill restart was one of the biggest challenges. With no one stepping forward to restart it, Caul says the future of the property will remain near the top of council’s agenda in 2020.
