Plenty Of Snow To End 2019 With

The Borderland region will continue to dig out today after yesterday’s snowstorm.

Signal Weather Services Bill Laidlaw says total amounts varied around the region.

The weather station at the Fort Frances measured 16 cm. Another at Gameland in the west end of the Rainy River district saw 24 cm.

Atikokan received about 15 cm. Laidlaw says larger amounts fell further south.

“We were on the west side of (the system) which is a good thing. If we’d been on the northeast side we would have gotten a lot more precipitation and we would have probably picked up some freezing rain out of it,” says Laidlaw.

Bemidji was hit with 13 inches of snow. International Falls received 7.8 inches. Big Falls received 9.2 inches. Eight inches fell in Orr and Cook

More snow is in the forecast for today, but only a couple of centimetres are expected.

Laidlaw says more storms are forecast for later this week.

“There will be another couple of lows, actually probably next Saturday is going to be the next big of snow. We’re getting a little bit today but this is just the last remnants of up this low moving off to the east.”

A declaration of a significant weather event remains in place in Fort Frances.

The town issued the declaration in the midst of the storm.

It’s now standard procedure for such declarations in such storm to provide warnings to motorists and pedestrians that roads and sidewalks aren’t the safest.

Town plows have been working continuously since the start of the storm.
